Microsoft and Mojang have released several free Minecraft Education lessons in an effort to entertain and educate some of the many school kids who are currently missing classes due to coronavirus lockdowns.
These lessons were pulled from or based on the Education Edition of Minecraft, which many schools use in traditional classes. A collection of 10 lessons can now be downloaded from the Minecraft Marketplace for free via the new Education category. These include a replica of the International Space Station, a robot-aided coding course, a tour of Washington D.C. landmarks, marine biology, greek history, and more. These lessons are now live, and will be free to download through June 30.
'The worlds include lesson plans like creative writing activities, build challenges, and tricky puzzles,' Mojang said in a blog post. Learning in Minecraft might sound a bit hokey, but if these lessons are anything like the Education Edition of the game, they're sure to be no joke. Minecraft has helped countless kids learn everything from modern coding to ancient history in classroom settings. If nothing else, these lessons ought to help keep affected kids entertained while they're stuck at home, but they'll probably learn a thing or two (or 10) in the process.

'Many are looking to gaming to remain connected with their friends while practicing social distancing, and we are seeing an unprecedented demand for gaming from our customers right now,' Spencer said. 'With hundreds of millions of kids at home due to coronavirus-related school closures, more kids are going online to spend time with their friends, explore online worlds and learn through play. Families are trying to navigate the need to help their children with distance learning and balance that with taking time to have fun … While kids may be home from school, family settings can help balance gaming with offline schoolwork and other responsibilities.'
This wouldn't be the first time Minecraft helped kids affected by coronavirus: just recently, a group of Japanese students used it to host their own virtual graduation ceremony.
Starting today, Mojang is requiring Microsoft accounts on all Minecraft game titles moving. As spotted by MSPU, the migration will start in early 2021, and new Minecraft players will be required to create a Microsoft account rather than a Mojang account starting today.
In a detailed blog post, Mojang stated that the use of Microsoft accounts is due to the 'increased security,' including two-factor authentication support and to connect all of their customers' Minecraft games and purchases to a single account.
Mojang created a FAQ page to guide players who need to migrate their accounts, create helpful YouTube videos, and announced Minecraft players will also receive emails about the procedure.
Due to the large Minecraft Java player community, Mojang will migrate players to Microsoft accounts in batches. This is a mandatory change; anyone that does not migrate their account now, may run into issues logging into their account later this year. As an added bonus, you will receive a free cape for your Minecraft character for your trouble.
Back in 2014, Microsoft bought the developers of Minecraft, Mojang Studios. Although a lot has happened since then, Mojang Studios allowed for those who owned Minecraft: Java Edition to continue to use their Mojang account, which has been separate from the Microsoft version of the game.
Well, it is finally time for this to change. Announced on Minecraft'sofficial website on October 21st, it looks like starting early 2021, Mojang Studios will be converting Mojang accounts into Microsoft accounts. They state that this will help with account security through Two-Factor Authentication, and it will bring all of Mojang's games under one account.
This migration will be mandatory. If you would like to continue to play the Java Edition of Minecraft, you will need to set up a Microsoft account and follow the instructions sent out in early 2021 to convert your Mojang account.
Although the Java Edition will require a Microsoft account to play, it will still be the same game. You will have access to mods and Java Edition servers just like you did before tho conversion.
To commemorate the migration, Mojang Studios said they would be giving all players who have the Java Edition of Minecraft a unique cape that can be worn in-game.
After the account migrations are complete, you will no longer be able to access your Mojang account, and new players will be unable to create Mojang accounts. This means that all games from Mojang Studios will require a Microsoft account to play.
